"Andrija Štampar" School of Public Health
"Andrija Štampar" Library is one of the oldest public health libraries in this part of the world, founded in 1927. This is the year when the School of Public Health and Institute of Public Health were founded being one institution. Here we can trace the Library's connection with the Institute of Public Health to which it still partly belongs. Being in the same area with the Institute of Immunology it became their Library as well. All this influenced its fund and collection of journals. Except for very rare old books that can be found in the Library, thanks to Professor Štampar and his connections all over the world and especially with the World Health Organization and the Rockefeller Foundation, stock of journals missing from the period during the Second World War when the Library was closed, was completed. Thus it became a very important and unique public health library not only in the Republic of Croatia but elsewhere.
In the meantime the Library widened its area of interest. Apart from public health many other biomedical fields found its place here, i.e. social medicine, health services research, microbiology, immunology, virology, parasitology, mycology, environmental health, ecology, water research, occupational medicine, medical statistics, medical informatics, family practice, gerontology, management in medicine etc.
Unfortunately new books are hard to find in the Library, but there is more than 300 journals (Croatian and foreign) received regularly.
Automation of the Library is slow but show some prosperities for the future -better computers resulting in better possibilities of storing our own fund and searching databases.
Since 1992 the Library became WHO Documentation Centre for the Republic of Croatia and depository library for WHO publications for Croatia. Therefore every requests concerning WHO (including its regional offices) publications, journals or documents should be addressed to us. A part of our work as a WHO Documentation Centre is a list of publications(A), journals(special issues)(B) and documents(C) issued every two months. It could be reached at the Internet and ordered for lending or photocopying.
